Job brief
Fredericton Bouldering Co-op (FBC) operates a climbing wall and fitness facility near downtown Fredericton. We formed in 2018 as a grassroots organization to grow the local climbing community and introduce our fantastic sport to active Frederictonians.
We are looking for an individual with experience setting boulder problems in a gym environment. The successful candidate must have strong communication skills and the ability to direct a team of volunteers. They must be well-versed in climbing-specific movement and have climbing experience.
The Head Route Setter reports to, and receives support from our Program Director and Operations Manager. They work in collaboration with our other Head Route Setter and our Coaching & Route Setting Coordinator to deliver consistent, safe, and inclusive sets. Head Routesetters will also be responsible for delivering Route Setting clinics based on our curriculum in-development.
The set work is typically done once per week on Sundays in addition to a more intense, multi-day set at least twice per year for competitions. Route Setting clinics will be scheduled based on demand and instructor availability.

Responsibilities
Coordinate with our other Head Route Setter and management team to determine route setting objectives for each new setting period as appropriate for the season, instructional needs, competitions, etc.
Direct route setting volunteers during resets
Design and set safe and inclusive boulder problems
Ensure all safety guidelines are followed as per the FBC Route Setting Handbook
Support proper auditing by recording information for each new problem put up
Along with the other Head Route Setter - facilitate clinics based on the FBC setting curriculum
Report any issues or concerns to the Setting Coordinator and Operations Manager
Take staff and member feedback into consideration when approaching a new set
Attend professional development training should an opportunity arise through FBC
Requirements & Assets
Experience climbing in a gym setting
Formal Route Setting training considered a major asset
Pass the FBC Setter 2 Test, demonstrating required route setting knowledge and ability
Experience as a Lead Route Setter, or demonstrated experience as an effective Route Setter within a team
Excellent organizational and leadership abilities
Good English language communication skills; French or additional language skills a strong asset
Ability to identify the needs of our client demographic and apply that to boulder sets
Ability to receive constructive feedback and openly discuss strategies to improve
Standard First Aid and CPR subsidized if renewal needed
Recent criminal record check
Compensation
Hourly wage of $16
